I try to avoid purely political posts because the Texas Legislature is composed primarily of idiots, and I don’t have the time to write about every dumb thing they so. Sometimes, though, I just can’t resist commenting.
The Texas Ethics Commission, whose eight members were all appointed by Republican office-holders, has issued an amazing ruling. The Commission says the law that requires Texas politicians to report all personal gifts worth more than $250 has an enormous loophole. When a politician receives cash or a check, the politician only has to report “currency” or “check.” The law does not require disclosure of the amount!
This, to me, is the same as a politician who received an expensive piece of antique furniture being able to report “wood.”
