Attorney General Demands Deceptive Insurance Ad Be Pulled

The consumer group Texas Watch has been working to have a deceptive television commercial pulled from the air, and has been successful. The misleading commercial was by Travelers Insurance Company. Here is a press release from Texas Watch:

The state attorney general ordered Travelers Cos. Inc. to stop running an advertisement that he called deceptive.

In a press release announcing a cease and desist order, Attorney General Greg Abbott said today that the Travelers ad improperly tells Texas homeowners that they should buy additional automobile insurance to prevent losing their homes.

“Texans are protected by robust homestead laws that insulate homeowners from the losses depicted in Travelers’ advertisements,” Abbott said in a press release.

If the company fails to stop airing the ad, then the company would face legal action by the state, Abbott said.

Abbott’s action comes two days after Texas Watch, a consumer advocacy group, asked Abbott and Texas Insurance Commissioner Mike Geeslin to take action against the company.

Alex Winslow, Texas Watch’s executive director, said in a statement that Abbott did the right thing.

“Texas families should never be subjected to false insurance industry advertising that preys on the fears many homeowners have about losing their homes,” Winslow said.

Travelers media representatives were not immediately available.
