A recent survey by Men’s Health magazine ranked Dallas as the second most dangerous city in the United States for drivers, behind only St. Louis. I’ve never driven in St. Louis, but it’s hard to imagine any place being worse than Dallas. With all the road construction, speeding drivers, and red light runners, you’re taking your life in your hands any time you venture out on Dallas streets.
At the other end of the spectrum, the safest cities were St. Paul, Minnesota and Lincoln, Nebraska.
The magazine compiled the list by studying accident statistics, including fatal accident rates, the percentage involving speeding, alcohol or hit-and-run, and the rate of seatbelt use. It also looked at laws on cell phone use and the number of years between accidents.
Texas can proudly claim three cities among the nation’s ten most dangerous, with Houston and Austin also ranking near the top (or bottom). You can see the top 100 cities here. These are the ten worst:
- St. Louis, MO
- Dallas, TX
- Charleston, WV
- Houston, TX
- Billings, MT
- Providence, RI
- Columbia, SC
- Durham, NC
- Orlando, FL
- Austin, TX
