4 Courses of Action to Take After a Slip and Fall Accident

Slip-and-fall accidents are a common cause of injuries on both public and private property. You could experience this situation in places that you frequently visit, such as the grocery store or a friend’s home. If you have a slip-and-fall accident, it is important to follow these four courses of action in order to protect your health and your rights.

Document the Scene

If possible, take photos of the place where you slipped and fell. This could help with your case if you need to take the property owner to court. For example, if the floor was wet and there was not a “caution” or “wet floor” sign to alert you of the danger, you might have a negligence case in court. Your photograph will have a date and time stamp on it.

Collect Witness Contact Information

It is also important to collect the contact information of any witnesses who saw you fall. Their testimony could be helpful in the event that you need to negotiate a settlement or take the property owner to court. Ask for the name, phone number and address of each person who saw you slip and fall. If you hire an attorney, the witnesses of your accident could be called to court to testify on your behalf.

Get Medical Treatment and Physical Therapy

Even if you think you just got a few bruises out of your slip-and-fall accident, it is important to go to the doctor or physical therapist for an evaluation. Soft tissue injuries such as strains and sprains sometimes do not manifest until a day or two after your accident. By seeking treatment right away, you can document your injuries and get started on healing as soon as possible.

Seek Legal Counsel

When you have a slip-and-fall accident on someone’s property, you may wish to seek legal advice. Even if you have insurance, you will have co-pays and deductibles to deal with, and those medical bills could add up to a significant amount of money. An attorney could advise you on your rights and explain your legal courses of action to have your bills paid.

A slip-and-fall accident could cause serious injuries, from a bruised bone or sprained ankle to a concussion or fracture of a bone. Prioritize your health and seek medical treatment and physical therapy so that you can fully and properly heal with minimal pain. By documenting what happened and seeking legal counsel, you can protect your rights and financial well-being.

About This Blog

The title of this blog reflects my attitude toward those government agencies and insurance companies that routinely mistreat injured or disabled people. As a Dallas, Texas lawyer, I've spent more than 45 years trying to help those poor folk, and I have been frustrated daily by the actions of the people on the other side of their claims. (Sorry if I offended you...)
