The Omaha (NE) World-Herald reports many were surprised last November when National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Administrator Mark Rosekind reversed the agency’s stance on the issue of seat belts on school buses when he said, “Seat belts save lives, and that includes seat belts on school buses,” he added, “Commitment to a simple principle – that all kids deserve seat belts on their school bus – must guide all of us.” The NHTSA’s previous stance was that the “modest reduction of fatalities” did not always justify the cost of adding seat belts on buses. The NHTSA endorsement of seat belts has prompted more bills to be introduced in state legislatures pushing for seat belts on school buses.
