The Washington Post reports that according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the presence of back-up cameras in cars has not “significantly cut down on cars backing into people and causing them harm.” President and founder of car safety nonprofit KidsAndCars.org Janette Fennell said drivers “get distracted by any number of things as their cars roll backward.” Between 2008 and 2011, injuries dropped eight percent, and fatalities dropped by 31 percent. Vice president of research at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Jessica Cicchino said, “We know that rear cameras can help, but they’re not a silver bullet.”
