The WJLA-TV Washington website reports that “just under a million unsafe vehicles are rolling around the District with unfixed open recalls, including serious issues or defective parts, according to the latest manufacturer data supplied to ABC 7 News by Carfax.” Many of these cars are “registered with rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft, and registered taxi cabs that shuttle you to Reagan National Airport or Dulles International Airport.” An investigation revealed that at Reagan, “280 vehicles or 19 percent of taxis have at least one recall.” Meanwhile, at Dulles, “25 percent of taxis or 181 vehicles have at least one recall.” Uber said in a statement, “Uber driver-partners receive quarterly reminders to stay up-to-date on current NHTSA vehicle recall information by visiting safercar.gov and signing up for safety recall notifications. We have joined the U.S. Department of Transportation’s bi-annual efforts to raise awareness about the importance of periodically checking for active recalls.”
