In continuing coverage, NBC News reports that a new report released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) revealed that the number of pedestrians killed in SUV-involved accidents increased by 81 percent over the last decade. IIHS suggested that the design of SUVs make it more dangerous to pedestrians. IIHS President David Harkey explained, “SUVs have higher front ends, and often the design for the vehicle is much more vertical than passenger cars.” The article also points out that sales of SUVs have increased over the past decade, with SUVs “represent[ing] more than half of all sales.”
