USA Today reports that GM will partner with Honda to “speed up the deployment of self-driving cars to major cities in 2019.” Honda will “contribute about $2 billion over 12 years to the partnership and will finance a $750 million equity investment in Cruise, GM’s self-driving car company.” GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement, “This is the logical next step in General Motors and Honda’s relationship, given our joint work on electric vehicles, and our close integration with Cruise.” Honda Executive Vice President Seiji Kuraishi said in a statement, “Honda chose to collaborate with Cruise and General Motors based on their leadership in autonomous and electric vehicle technology and our shared vision of a zero-emissions and zero-collision world.”
The AP reports that the companies “said the goal…is to develop an autonomous vehicle that can be produced at a high volume and deployed globally.”
The story was reported similarly by Forbes, and The Verge.
