The New York Times reports that a study released by the Center for Auto Safety – a nonprofit consumer advocacy group founded by Ralph Nader – indicates that lemon laws throughout the country vary widely by state. The study said that New Jersey was ranked number one with “the best lemon law” nationwide, which allows state-run arbitration and “pushes the automaker to fix a problem quickly.” Illinois was ranked last due to lack of a penalty on automakers that delay the process and its limited one year, 12,000 mile coverage period.
