4 Things You Should Do Immediately After a Minor Accident

A fender bender collision is a minor car accident that does not result in serious damage to the vehicles or injury to anyone. In such cases, you may be tempted to shake hands with the other driver and forget it happened. But you should take at least four steps to protect yourself and your vehicle in case should subsequently develop.

Call the Police

A police report will evaluate the road accident and provide a detailed, objective report for the official record. The report may be needed later if it turns out one of the cars develops a mechanical problem or a driver or passenger discovers medical issues stemming from the accident. The police can also advise everyone involved on next steps that may be needed if they are unsure about what to do. Traffic can also be directed to enable both vehicles to return to the road safely after being pulled over.

Contact Your Insurer

Your insurance company may need to be informed in case the other driver feels that his or her vehicle needs repairs or discovers an injury that may be attributed to the accident. The insurance office can advise you on the auto policy limits as well as request information about the accident that may be needed. If the accident is minor in scope, your insurance premiums might not increase if a claim is filed.

Get a Medical Exam

Even if you feel completely fine following the accident, it is often a good idea to have your doctor give you a checkup to make sure there are no hidden injuries. Sometimes it takes a few days for some problems to develop or become noticeable. A physical exam can help to reassure you that everything is fine. Minor injuries, like a scrape, bump, or bruise, can also be taken care of promptly to ease pain and prevent infection.

Consult an Attorney

You may also want to talk with a car accident attorney to see if any damages, even minor ones, should be covered by the other driver if the accident was their fault. You should also find out if you will be held responsible for any problems incurred by the other driver, now or later. An attorney who is familiar with car accident law can explain your rights and responsibilities in case the accident leads to a claim by a driver or passenger.

Protect yourself from the consequences of a car accident by consulting these professionals. If a minor accident turns into a major claim, you’ll be prepared.

About This Blog

The title of this blog reflects my attitude toward those government agencies and insurance companies that routinely mistreat injured or disabled people. As a Dallas, Texas lawyer, I've spent more than 45 years trying to help those poor folk, and I have been frustrated daily by the actions of the people on the other side of their claims. (Sorry if I offended you...)
