1Bloomberg reports that Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd., a Japanese company, “is developing a ‘smart tire’ that can monitor its own air pressure and temperature, and eventually respond by itself to changes in road conditions.” Bloomberg points out that tires are not the only things being modified, as Lear Corp., AGC Inc., and Koito Manufacturing Co. are placing “semiconductors and sensors inside headlights, glass and seats to make them as intelligent as the cars driving themselves.” While “core technology for autonomous driving” is dominated by three entities, including Alphabet’s Waymo LLC, “suppliers still count on finding their own space in the business.” Components “for advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous driving are expected to become a $57 billion market within a decade, according to BIS Research.”
