USA Today reports, “An unprecedented series of recalls for an array of dangerous defects” presaged a possible “barrage of lawsuits” against used-car dealers “for selling recalled used cars without fixing them first.” In response, they create “model legislation” allowing the sale of recalled used cars if open recall disclosures are “somewhere in a stack of sales documents” and are using an “army of lobbyists” to get the measure passed in states. USA Today calls it an example of “how special interest groups with deep pockets go from state to state with model legislation…to get the policies they want, often with little public scrutiny and sometimes with tragic consequences.”
