The AP reports a study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that “smaller, lighter cars” may be the reason women are more likely to receive a serious injury in a crash than men. While the percentage of crashes involving minivans and SUVs were similar for men and women, women were more likely to be in a crash involving a car, while men were more likely to be involved in a crash while driving a pickup. IIHS Vice President of Vehicle Research Jessica Jermakian said, “The numbers indicate that women more often drive smaller, lighter cars and that they’re more likely than men to be driving the struck vehicle in side-impact and front-into-rear crashes.” She added, “Once you account for that, the difference in the odds of most injuries narrows dramatically.”
